This course is designed for school counselors, social workers, psychologists, administrators, teachers, prevention professionals, behavioral health staff, and other school or community partners who serve on—or are interested in developing—a Student Assistance Program team. Whether you are new to SAP or looking to strengthen an existing program, you will leave with tools and strategies you can put into practice right away.

Student Assistance Programs (SAPs) provide schools with a structured, team-based approach for identifying and responding to students who may be experiencing academic, behavioral, social, emotional, substance-use, attendance, family, or other barriers to success. This self-paced online course introduces the core components of an effective SAP, including team development, referral and problem-solving processes, family and community partnerships, and connecting students with appropriate supports. Participants will explore practical strategies and tools that can be adapted to strengthen an existing SAP or support the development of a new program.

This course is designed for school counselors, social workers, psychologists, nurses, administrators, teachers, prevention professionals, behavioral health staff, and community partners who serve on—or work closely with—school-based student support teams. It is appropriate for both professionals who are new to SAP and those looking to strengthen an existing program. This course is not intended as clinical training and does not prepare participants to diagnose or treat mental health or substance-use disorders. Individuals who do not work with schools, students, families, or school-community partnerships may find the content less directly applicable.
